Travel Trailers

Travel Trailers are some of the most common, and most accessible RVs on the road. These RVs have some distinct advantages over other types of RV, making them well suited for many types of travelers.

The first big plus for Travel Trailers, is the hitch. Many vehicles come with a 2" hitch receiver, allowing a wide range of cars, SUVs and Trucks to tow a travel trailer. If you do have a hitch receiver, the next step is to find a trailer that fits your purpose when RVing, which really depends on your travel style.

Travel Trailers come in all shapes and sizes, and include some of the smallest RVs you can find on the market. From 40-foot luxury RVs, to compact teardrop trailers, there are hundreds of options to choose from. With a wide selection of amenities and comforts that you can take on the road with you, travel trailers offer great versatility.

One downside to travel trailers is that because of their extended tow hitch setup, they are less stable than other RVs on the road, often swaying when a Fifth Wheel would not. This is something to keep in mind if you're opting for a larger travel trailer as your first RV.

Fifth Wheels

Fifth Wheel trailers are typically larger, and better equipped that comparable travel trailers. This is because the fifth wheel hitch allows the tow vehicle to carry a significant portion of the RVs weight, putting less stress on the chassis during transit, and providing more leeway to install standard features.

Because of the unique Fifth Wheel hitch setup, fifth wheels require a more specific set of vehicles (usually heavy duty trucks) in order to tow. Fortunately, the configuration of the fifth wheel over the bed of the truck can make these RVs surprisingly easy to maneuver.

Because Fifth Wheels typically come in larger floor plans with more amenities, these RVs make a great option for people who are going to be staying in their RV long term. Many fifth wheels have hookups for a washer/dryer setup, as well as improved kitchen appliances that make them perfect for an extended stay.

As mentioned before, the fact that Fifth Wheels require a specific hitch can prove a significant barrier for those who are looking to get into one of these RVs. If your truck doesn't already have the proper hitch, one can be purchased and installed in your vehicle, but it's an extra expense you should consider carefully.
